How to Upload Emotes to Twitch

If you’re experiencing any issues while uploading your emotes to Twitch, here are some of the most common reasons and steps to troubleshoot them.

Please note that Twitch’s default error message is always “wrong file size” every time – it’s not actually specific to the problem – so we recommend reviewing all troubleshooting steps to narrow down what the actual issue is:

1.  Our files come in a .zip file that will need to be extracted first – this is a compressed folder. We set it up this way, so you would only have to download 1 file from us, instead of downloading all the emotes in all 3 sizes — that would be a lot of files! However, Twitch cannot take any files from this folder directly. You first need to unzip (aka extract) the folder somewhere on your computer. This can be on your Desktop, but we would recommend a location where you intend to keep the emotes stored more permanently. If you attempt to upload files directly from the zip folder, you’ll likely get a size error from Twitch, or not be able to see the files at all when trying to select the emotes from your computer.
2. If you have already unzipped the folder, but are still experience an issue or error, we recommend moving the emote files to a different location on your computer. There could be something blocking Twitch from seeing the files in its current location. If it’s in your Downloads folder, try moving the extracted emote files to your Desktop, Documents, or Pictures folder instead and try again.
3. Try another browser. Your internet browser may be the reason why its not working. Problems like outdated browsers, conflicting extensions, disabled JavaScript, or blocked cookies could interfere with emote visibility. Try uploading them from another browser and see if you’re still experiencing the error.
4. You’ve recently gained Affiliate status.* First off, congratulations! However, if you just recently qualified for Affiliate status, there may still be some steps you have to do before you get emote access. After meeting the requirements, you will receive an email and will have to complete the Affiliate application. The application must be reviewed and approved before you get access to everything — and even after approval, it can take some time for everything to be unlocked. We typically see people get access within 48 hours of being approved.
5. You haven’t streamed in awhile, and recently started back up. If you were previously an Affiliate, but haven’t streamed in awhile, you may have lost access to the ability to upload emotes.* You will need to stream a certain number of days and hours to get re-affiliated and regain access to emotes.
6. Your download may have been corrupted. If the file sizes are showing up as 0kb, then it’s very likely the file was corrupted, which can happen if a download is interrupted for any reason. Simply re-download the emote; the links we send to your email address never expires, so you can just re-download them again at any time.

While we do ensure to resize our emotes to the correct sizes for Twitch (112px, 56px, 28px) and test all of our emotes on our own channel before we make them available to you on our website, we are still human and can make mistakes.
